Students were asked to create an exhibition poster emphasizing the use of typography as the basis of their design. Designs and type solutions were based on an art movement or artist of their choice. Designs were not allowed to reproduce actual work from any artist but allow for expressive type to reflect the energy and feel of the work. Students were encouraged to create their own imagery to compliment their designs. Research and exploration included questions as to: what medium was used primarily in their work?; what themes persisted throughout the artist’s work?; how did typography tie into the identified themes? Research by the students included elements of fine art, architecture, and historical events of the art movement’s era. Some leeway was given to the final designs as they pertained to the concept “expressive typography” if the student’s process and design investigation was through and robust. The following student work is from the Graphic Design departments of the University of Minnesota Duluth and Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA.
